Wilderness First Aid Control Severe Bleeding

Expose the wound and press firmly with gauze or clean cloth.
Maintain pressure and add material without repeatedly lifting the first pad to check.
For uncontrolled life-threatening limb bleeding, apply a commercial tourniquet according to training and record the time.

Do not loosen a tourniquet after application; obtain emergency evacuation as quickly as possible.

Survival Basics Decide Whether to Stay or Move

Ask whether anyone knows your route and whether searchers are likely.
Compare the risks of staying with the terrain, distance, daylight, weather, injury, and certainty of any move.
If staying, make shelter and signals; if moving, leave a clear note and mark direction and time.

Do not move on a guess or separate a group without a clear rescue reason.

Find and Treat Water Choose the Safest Source

Prefer a known safe supply, then clearer moving water collected upstream from camps, livestock, roads, or waste.
Avoid water with fuel sheen, chemical smell, toxic algae, dead animals, mine drainage, or industrial runoff.
Collect where the bank is stable and you cannot be swept into the water.

Boiling and ordinary filters cannot make chemically contaminated or salty water safe.

Wilderness First Aid Treat Hypothermia and Frostbite

Move out of wind and wet, replace wet clothing, and insulate above and below.
Warm the chest, neck, armpits, and groin with wrapped warm packs or shared body heat.
Protect frostbitten tissue from pressure and refreezing; evacuate serious cases.

Do not rub frostbite, use direct fire, give alcohol, or thaw tissue that may refreeze.
